Nancy Schlote recently entered an art exhibit in the “Celebrate the Artist in You” art show judged by the Hannibal Arts Council and hosted by the Hannibal Regional Office in Hannibal, Mo. on May 10. She won the “People’s Choice Award” and was presented a plaque at the awards ceremony on May 18.
What makes this achievement and event so special is all of the artists who enter exhibits, including Nancy, have a developmental disability, proving talent has no boundaries. Following the show, artists are given the opportunity to either sell their art after it is judged or take it home.
Nancy entered two art projects this year, a butterfly collage, which she sold, and the birds in flight crayon melt, that won the award. Nancy said her middle school art teacher is the person who got her interested in art. She’s been creating artworks ever since and has given many of her projects to friends as gifts for special occasions.
Knowing that Nancy is a talented artist, her Case Manager at Community Opportunities suggested she enter the art show three years ago. At that time she entered exhibits but chose not to sell any of her work. The following year she sold a ladybug collage and this year she sold a piece and won an award. Nancy is looking forward to entering more art contests and we are all looking forward to seeing her beautiful projects and achievements.
