Both Silex teams met with early success in this year’s Clopton Tournament which got underway Dec. 31. Through

Wednesday, the state-ranked Lady Owls notched two wins, maintaining their undefeated season. In the opening round, they raced past a young Winfield Lady Warrior squad. The score was 56-14. Silex built a 21-5 lead in the opening period and increased it to 53-11 after three periods. Natalie Fleming led Silex with 25 points and 16 steals. She made 11 of 13 shots from the field. Ashley Brown and Lindsey Barnhart had three rebounds each.
“We were very good defensively from start to finish,” said Coach Rober James. “I was pleased with the way that we ran our lanes and shared the ball. It was our best on ball defense effort of the year.”
In the tourney’s other first-round girls’ games, Monroe City over Wright City 53-6, Clopton over Louisiana 53-29 and Christian over Elsberry 49-30.
In their opening round game, the Owls had a strong effort in a 65-45 win over Monroe City. Matt Huber led Silex with 21 points. Joey Rau-Massey and Ryan Eisenbath followed with 18 and 10 points respectively. Eisenbath and James Lasater were the top rebounders with five each. Austin Fleming had four steals.
After falling behind 8-3 in the opening period, the Owls dominated the action over the remaining three quarters, leading 21-19 at the half and 46-34 after three periods.
“We played very well in the second half to pull away,” said Coach Chad Twellman. “I am really proud of the emergence of Joey and Matt tonight.”
The scores of the other three opening round games included: Warrenton 53-21 over Wright City, Hannibal 66-43 over Barat Academy and Clopton 62-49 over Louisiana.
The girls’ semi-finals were held Wednesday highlighted by Silex and Clopton moving into the tourney’s title game. Silex got 24 points from Leah Miller and 23 from Natalie Fleming as they posted a 70-55 win over Christian. Clopton moved into the finals with a 45-37 win over Monroe City. In the consolation semi-finals, Elsberry won 55-19 over Winfield and Louisiana 48-11 over Wright City.
In regular season boys play, the Owls lost a 60-59 game to North Callaway on Dec. 18. Matt Huber led with 12 points followed by Joey Rau-Massey and Ryan Eisenbath with 11 points each. Fleming led in rebounds (7), steals (3) and assists (4).
“This was a tough road loss,” said Coach Twellman. “We had many opportunities to win but couldn’t close the deal.”
On Dec. 21, Silex lost 53-49 to New Haven. Fleming scored 19 points, had 7 rebounds, three steals and four assist. Huber also had three steals. The Shamrocks led 32-31 after three quarters. The action was intense in the final period by New Haven was able to hold off the Owls.
“We came up short against a nice team,” said Coach Twellman. “We need to learn how to control and win games especially with the lead.”
