Senior catcher Morgan Oliver knew a lot was riding on her shoulders as a key returnee from the 2011 state championship team at Troy Buchanan. Her efforts were recently awarded as she was named the St. Louis Area Player of the Year by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. She heads the list of several Troy Buchanan and Winfield High School Players named to the post-season softball team.
Oliver, who signed last week to attend Jefferson College in the fall (Tony Cook head coach), responded to her personal challenge creating havoc for the area pitchers she faced. She finished the year with a .607 batting average and a 1.062 slugging average. She established a new state record for most RBIs (67).
“I wouldn’t have had the success without the help from Coach Richardson (Lance) who worked with me to improve my offensive skills,” she said. “We fell short of our team goal of returning to Springfield but overcame some adversity late in the season.
An elementary education major, she felt comfortable during her visit to Jefferson in Hillsboro. “It’s a good program and an area where I feel comfortable with,” she said.
She has been active playing several select softball games with, most recently, the St. Louis Nemesis and previously the Missouri Ice.
Joining Oliver on the all-metro first team included Sarah Entwistle of Winfield. She hit .413 had seven triples, two home runs and 16 RBIs in her lead-off position for the Warriors. Troy Buchanan’s Christa Reisinger was a first-team outfield selection. She hit .554 with two triples scored 48 runs, 11 RBIs and had 21 steals. Defensively, she only committed one error.
Liz Wiegand, senior of Troy Buchanan, was named to the second-team. Her record was 16-1 with a 1.15 ERA. She struck out 106 batters in almost 116 innings.
Mackenzie Hoelting was the pitcher named to the third-team. Her record was 19-5 with a 2.18 ERA with 137 strikeouts in 141 innings.
