The story about the waiter standing up for a young boy with Down Syndrome has swept the news recently. If you haven’t heard of the particular story, here is a small recap.
Michael Garcia, a waiter at a restaurant in Houston, was working one night when a family came in and sat down next to another family (the Castillo family) with a five-year-old boy who suffers from Down Syndrome. After a few minutes of sitting at tables next to each other, the Castillo family noticed that the other family had moved away from them. Michael Garcia, addressed the situation and was told by the family that moved that, “special needs children need to be special somewhere else”. After being told that, Michael quickly announced he would not be able to serve that family and took a stand for the Castillo family and their small boy.
This story touched my heart. Many people don’t understand the struggles that a family can go through, with or without a disabled family member. It’s very important to always be considerate of others around you and if there is a problem, the best thing to do is address it as kindly as possible without singling out individuals to make them feel bad about who they are. You can never be sure of the struggles that a family or individual is facing and should always live by the Golden Rule. It’s hard sometimes, especially if you are going through a rough patch, but others might be experiencing their own rough patch and to put them down doesn’t make it any easier.
There needs to be more appreciation in the world and acceptance. I appreciate everyone in my life, whether I say it or not. I don’t always do the best at showing it, and I’m working on that. I have learned a lot about others because of my job as a reporter. I get a chance to meet many different people in all walks of life in the area. Some stories that are covered are inspiring and others are informative, but everyone has a story to tell.
I can count my blessings that my stories are dull compared to some that I hear. I am thankful for the life that I have been given and wouldn’t trade it for the world.
Every now and then we can let life get the best of us and sometimes we don’t always show as much grace and appreciation as we should but there is always time to redeem yourself. Take a minute and think of how you can change your life for the better and those around you in the process.
Michael took a stand for what he believed and helped a family to feel more welcome in the process. The family that wasn’t served might have learned a lesson out of the reaction they were given. You never know how words are going to affect someone, so always treat others the way you want to be treated.
