Fleming hits career high in win over state ranked Hermann

Following their first loss of the season, the Silex Lady Owls have posted two impressive wins in action last week.

Natalie Fleming scored 41 points in a win over Hermann.

During the semi-finals Jan. 23 of the Bowling Green Tournament, Natalie Fleming and Lindsey Barnhart scored 14 points and Ashley Brown chipped in 13 points in a 53-40 win over Elsberry. Fleming also had 12 rebounds, four steals and four assists. Leading 26-22 at the half, Silex put some distance between the teams with a 16-4 edge in scoring in the third period.

“We were able to hang on to win the game against a very physical and much improved Elsberry team,” said Coach Robert James. “Everyone pitched in and handled and shared the ball around the basket. We didn’t have our best shooting night so the girls hit the offensive glass to offset this. We have to do a better job at the other end rebounding or it is going to catch up with us.”

That fear came apparent in the championship game Jan. 25 against the host Lady Bobcats who handed the Lady Owls their first loss (55-42) of the season. Aly Miller led Silex with 17 points, a personal high for the season. Fleming was held to 6 points, well below her season’s average.

“It was a disappointing performance,” said James. “They (Bowling Green) played with more energy from start to finish. They were active on the defensive end and really stalled our offense. On the offensive side, they found a mismatch and scored. Our only highlight was Aly who hit on  five of six attempts from beyond he arc.”

On Jan. 28, Silex posted a 70-8 win over Wright City. Fleming scored 20 points, seven steals and seven assists.  They raced to a 29-0 lead in the first period enroute to the win.

“Ten players scored for us and is was a good team where everyone got to see significant minutes. We did a good job executing our half-court offense.”

In a battle of state-ranked teams, Silex picked up a huge win on the road Jan. 29 with a 62-56 win over Hermann. Fleming scored a career high 41 points and had 16 rebounds in the game. She scored 17 points in the final period as the Lady Owls rallied with a 23-9 scoring edge. As a team, the Lady Owls were 19 of 23 from the free throw line.

“A great road win against the third-ranked Class 3 team in the state,” said James. “I can’t say enough about how the girls battled back in the fourth period after trailing by eight after three periods. All of them picked up their intensity on defense which was the difference.

Injuries continue to haunt the Silex boys’ team. They lost 54-47 to Louisiana in the opening round of the Bowling Green Tournament. Austin Fleming led Silex with 19 points.

“The game was frustrating to say the least,” said Coach Chad Twellman. “We missed 12 lay ups and committed way too many turnovers. We allowed seven offensive rebounds which led to 16 points by Louisiana. We are still  trying to learn to play with Ryan (Eisenbath) but really need some others to step up. We were also without James Lasaster who had sprained his ankle earlier in the day in physical ed class.”

Silex Owls returned to the win column with a 70-35 win over Wright City.

“We played decent but could have kept the turnovers down,” said Twellman. “We missed several layups again out of our traps . Hope we can get that together soon.”
