Winfield High School advanced three wrestlers to the state wrestling tournament at Mizzou Arena on the campus of the University of Missouri in Columbia. The Warrior contingent advanced from the Class 2, District 2 Tournament hosted by St. Charles West High School.
The Warriors were led by senior Kyle Lippmann who placed first in the 152 pound weight class. Kyle advanced by pinning three of his four opponents in the tournament. In the championship match he pinned his opponent from Moberly in a time of 3:53. With this accomplishment, Kyle became Winfield’s first four time state qualifier in the sport of wrestling. Lippmann will take a record of 42-6 into the state tournament this weekend.
Other state qualifiers for the Warriors were Trevor Wilsey a senior, at 106 pounds. He is a two time state qualifier. Trevor advanced by placing third in his weight class. In the third place match Trevor defeated his opponent from McCluer South Berkeley by a score of 5 to 4. Wilsey will advance to state with a record of 21-7.
Sophomore Eric Nevels is the other state qualifier for the Warriors. Eric will make his first appearance in the state tournament, as he finished fourth in the 126 pound weight class. Eric lost the third place match by a 6-4 decision in sudden victory overtime to his opponent from St. Charles West. Nevels will carry a 26-18 record to Mizzou this weekend.
The Warrior team finished in eighth place in the 14-team field won by St. Charles West High School. Other wrestlers which scored points in the tournament with wins, were Brendan Politte at 113 pounds and JJ Javaux at 138 pounds.
