Check out Powell Memorial Library
Have you “checked out” Powell Memorial Library (PML) lately? If not, the people of PML strongly recommend you do so. With an up-to-date database and over 30,000 materials to check out, there is something for everyone in the family to enjoy!
PML is a unique library in Missouri, as it is the only library completely maintained through the school district; this is because Lincoln County has no library tax added onto property taxes. Therefore, a small fee is required to have a library membership. For patrons living in the Lincoln County R-III school district, a yearly membership is only $10- less than a dollar per month! The fee is $50 if a patron does not live in the district. In order to obtain a library card, you must be at least eighteen years of age and bring the fee with two forms of identification to the library to sign up. Families are allowed to be on one membership card, for no extra charge. The library also has twelve computers with access to the library’s database and the internet. Anyone who brings a form of identification and pays a dollar can access the internet for an hour, even without a library membership. They also have a printer that will print black-and-white pages for twenty-five cents per page, and color pages for fifty cents each. The library’s database is free to access, as is our Wi-Fi if you bring your own computer.
Powell Memorial Library’s database can be accessed online at home by going to the Lincoln County R-III School District’s website, putting the cursor on the “Community” tab (not clicking on it), and scrolling down to the “Powell Memorial Library” button to click on it. There you may browse our materials and search for specific items in various categories. We have both Adult and Youth Fiction and Nonfiction, including Adult Large Print and Christian Fiction. We also have audio books (updated quarterly), children’s easy readers and books for all reading levels, and genealogy information. PML’s variety of materials also includes all of the National Geographic magazines, dating back to 1952, along with other magazines and many TBHS yearbooks. We have all of this year’s state and national award winning books, as well as numerous books that have won these awards in previous years.
The library accepts donations at all times, and materials that cannot be shelved are sold in our semi-annual used book sales. This spring’s sale is April 26 and 27.
Every summer, Powell Memorial Library has a reading program for grades K-8. The library is always grateful for the fantastic rewards that local businesses provide for reading program participants. This year, they will introduce a new aspect of the reading program, called “Mommy and Me” story time. This is open to all Pre-K children in the community, as well as mommies of all ages!
Powell Memorial invites you to come for a visit, whether it is to access the internet, read a book to your child, or simply enjoy the view. Their address is 951 W. College Street, Troy. From tying your shoes to Nancy Drew, form learning about rocks to Dr. Spock, they’ve got your reading needs covered!
