Winfield wins in overtime, evens season’s record
On April 23, a cold, rainy and windy, Tuesday, Winfield traveled to Warrenton for a conference game. The game remained scoreless throughout regulation, then through the first overtime, and again through the second overtime. After 100 minutes without a goal, penalty kicks would decide the winner. After the first five shooters from each team, it was still tied. By the seventh shooter, Winfield came out on top, with a final official score of Winfield-1, Warrenton-0.
Winfield’s goal scorers in PKs were Kasey Kaimann, Mackenzie Hoelting, and Rachael Burkemper. Katie Burkemper made one critical save as Winfield’s goalkeeper.
Abby Hirsch played the first 40 minutes as Winfield’s goalkeeper, making one save.
Katie Burkemper took over at halftime, played the final 60 minutes, and made nine saves.
The win, which was the first time Winfield beat Warrenton in the program’s history, as well as the first conference win in the program’s history, improves Winfield’s overall season record to 5-5.
On Wednesday, April 24, Winfield traveled to Lutheran St. Charles for a soccer game. Unfortunately, the night did not end in Winfield’s favor, as LSC posted a 4-0 shutout.
The only statistic to note came from Katie Burkemper, who played the full 80 minutes as Winfield’s goalkeeper, making 17 saves in the effort, one of which was a penalty kick save.
