Students at the Sacred Heart School in Troy were dressed from head to toe in Cardinal’s gear in preparation for a fun filled anti-drug program. Joe Cunningham along with the St. Louis Cardinal’s own Fredbird came to the school on April 24 to present their program known as “Doin’ It Right” which has been to many area schools over the past 25 years. The program talks about the dangers of illegal drugs, emphasizes staying in school, participating in sports and regularly exercising in order to keep off drugs. Danny Flynn, who was the acting principal for the day, introduced the pair and then was subjected to Fredbird’s shenanigans and antics throughout the program.
Fredbird entertained the students and teachers alike by dancing about and harassing Joe as he presented the information to the students. After covering the three messages of the program which are stay in school; get involved in sports and exercise; and say no to drugs; the students and faculty were given opportunities to win Cardinal’s gear.
Sister Jeannette Fennewald was an instrumental part of bringing the program to the school. During the program, Sister Jeannette awarded essay winners with medals. One student from each grade was selected as the winner for their essay written about why they should not do drugs.
The fun filled day continued for the students as they also had a raffle for “Homers for Health”. “Homers for Health” is program co-chaired by Matt Holliday, David Freese and Allen Craig, along with the St. Louis Cardinals and SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center. Fans are able to pledge money towards every home run hit by a Cardinal’s player during the 2013 regular season. All money raised by the program supports the Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center.
