Honor Korean War era veterans with a brick

Last fall saw a successful effort in the placement of a memorial for Korean War veterans in Lincoln County. This year, there is an effort to help recognize individual veterans who served their country during Korean War years (1950-1954).

The Korean War Memorial Bench is located on the lawn of the Lincoln County Courthouse on Main Street in Troy. Troy VFW members at the time Irvin Bueneman, Ron Smith and John I. Wilson helped coordinate the project with the Lincoln County Commission.

This year’s project calls for bricks to be placed around the concrete base. On each brick will be the name of the veteran, branch of service and rank and the veteran’s date of service. A donation of $40 is asked to help defray the cost of the bricks and the work to place them. Bill Benhardt of Snow Hill Nursery will place the bricks.

“This is not just for those veterans who were assigned to Korea but to all the servicemen and women who served in all the military branches 1950 through 1954,” said Wilson.

For more information call Wilson at 636-462-5248 or Ron Smith at 314-210-8502. Donations and information can be sent to: John I. Wilson, 1019 Judy Lane, Troy, Mo., 63379.

A deadline of July 4, 2013 has been set.
