When Sam Migliazzo’s mother, Jill, was six months pregnant with him, an ultrasound showed that something was wrong with his kidneys. Now 18, Migliazzo finds himself in need of a kidney transplant.
Born six weeks premature, Migliazzo underwent surgery at just two days old in an attempt to repair his urethra. However, by that time, enough fluid had backed up into his kidneys that the damage had been done.
Over the years, Migliazzo’s doctors have been continually amazed at how well he’s doing. Throughout his entire life, he has made regular trips to the nephrology office to have his kidney function tested, and after all those years, his one remaining functioning kidney had been performing beautifully.
But now a transplant is necessary, as his kidney function is beginning to deteriorate. His mother has been found to be a perfect donor match, and the transplant is scheduled to take place in June.
The average kidney transplant costs nearly $250,000. And that’s only the beginning. Although his health insurance will cover the cost of the transplant itself, he and his family still face significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of his life, he will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications, which are as critical to his survival as the transplant.
To help alleviate the financial burden, Migliazzo turned to the National Foundation for Transplants (NFT) for assistance with some of these financial burdens. NFT is a nonprofit organization that helps patients raise funds to pay for transplant-related expenses.
Saturday, June 8 at 7 p.m., volunteers are holding a mouse race at the Trinity Lutheran School’s gymnasium, 4689 N. Hwy 94 in St. Charles. The evening will also include a silent auction, raffle and music.
