In many instances, such as this scam, the customer is signed up for something they didn’t initially sign up for. The scammer will take your personal information and apply it to an online account that they will then be able to control. This account is being linking to Social Security funds. In this case, letters are being received saying that customers are signing up to be apart of the “my Social Security Account”. “my Social Security Account” recently expanded to online use which makes it easier to personalize online account that people can use beginning in their working years and continuing throughout the time they receive Social Security benefits. More than 60 million Social Security beneficiaries and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients can now access their benefit verification letter, payment history, and earnings record instantly using their online account. Social Security beneficiaries also can change their address and start or change direct deposit information online.
This program is a valid program unless you receive notice that you have signed up for it and know that it is against your will, that is when you should be concerned. There have been tens of thousands of cases filed of this sort already, many from the Lincoln County area. If you suspect you could have been scammed, the Social Security Administration recommends people to report any problems to the FTC at 1-877-IDTHEFT or go to www.idtheft.gov and click on the link for “Report Identity Theft.” You also have the option to contact the Social Security Administration and have them put a block on any online activity.
