Winfield community gardens donate fresh produce to community
“Helping Us Helping Others” is the motto of the Winfield Community Gardens. The gardens are located in the City of Winfield in a vacated 50’x100’ lot in the flood plain. Many community businesses contributed to the development of the gardens. Old Monroe Lumber donated all the lumber used to build nine 4’x8’ raised beds. Mueller Brothers in Old Monroe donated wood chips for the areas around the raised beds. Lincoln County Master Gardeners donated all the plants and seeds used in the garden, including onions, green beans, yellow squash, zucchini, cucumbers, corn, sweet potatoes, red potatoes, peppers, and tomatoes. Calvary Assembly of God church volunteers have maintained the gardens and done the harvesting of crops for deliveries to the Bread For Life food pantry in Troy and the Winfield Residential Home. More than 750 pounds of fresh vegetables have been donated so far, and the gardens are still producing!
