Trojans split volleyball matches
Troy Volleyball Trojans defeated Francis Howell North but it took three games (26-28, 25-14, 25-16).
“We started off the first set with a few too many unforced errors and North was able to capitalize with the win,” said Coach Lane Cox. “In the second and third set, serve/receive stepped up a little, and our hitters adjusted to their defense.”
Leading kills was Riley Stephens with 11 and Courtney Huff with 8. Stef Richterkessing led in blocks with 4 followed by Mennemeyer and Huff with 3. Huff also led in ace serves with four. Richterkessing also had 28 assists on the night. “It was a good first win for the Trojans,” said Cox.
In a match with Marquette, Troy lost in two tight matches (24-26, 21-25).
Kill leaders on the night were senior Courtney Huff (7), Riley Stephens (6) and Baylie Carroll (5). Stef Richterkessing finished the night with 19 assists, 2 blocks and a kill. Huff led the defense with 6 digs in the back, and 2 ace serves.
“Marquette had very strong servers that put us on our heels in serve receive starting off both sets slow,” said Cox. “We were able to battle back in the first and tie it up 24-24, but then losing serve followed by an error. In the second match we were unable to dig out of the five point deficit we got into early. It was a well matched game that was fun to watch.”
