Zack Miller competes in welding on the national stage

This past June, Pike-Lincoln Technical Center Welding student Zack Miller attended the SkillsUSA National Competition in Kansas City, Mo. To reach the national level, Zach first had to compete at the district and state levels.
In the district contests, Zack earned 2nd place which gave him the right to compete at the state level. The state contest is held at Linn State Technical College at the beginning of April. Over 2500 Missouri career and technical education students arrive at the college to compete in different hands-on and leadership contests. PLTC students earned the right to compete in welding, welding fabrication, and diesel technology at the state level. After two days of competitions, Zack came out on top in the Welding Contest with a 1st place win. Only 1st place medalists can attend the national competition.
Prior to heading off to national competition, Zack entered a scholarship contest through the Mike Rowe Works Foundation. This foundation has awarded numerous education scholarships and helps to promote the skilled trades. Zack was one of two students from Missouri to win the scholarship. This scholarship helped to pay for the tools and uniforms needed for competition and to cover the cost of his meals during the week long competition. Zack and the 49 other scholarship winners had the opportunity to meet Mike Rowe during a luncheon held in their honor.
Zack’s contest at nationals took place over two days. In the end, Zack placed 23rd out of the 50 competitors in the welding contest! After the contest was completed, Zack was offered a job by one of the companies attending. Zack turned down this $30/hour position to continue his education with the scholarships he received from Missouri Welding Institute. Zack plans on completing his education before heading out to be a leader in his field. PLTC is extremely proud of Zack and his accomplishments.
