Area Sports Recap
Several area teams are wrapping up their regular season, preparing for district competition.
Clopton/Elsberry IndianHawks continue to find success on the road hard to achieve as they dropped a 35-14 game at North Callaway. They trailed 14-8 at the half. Their score came on a touchdown by Rheed Leake and Collin Dugan caught a pass for the two-point conversion. In the third quarter, the Thunderbirds put up 15 points, extending their lead to 29-14. In the fourth quarter, quarterback Jake Hicks scored on a one-yard run but the extra point attempt failed.
Leake carried 17 times for 104 yards and caught a pass for nine yards. Hicks completed five passes in 12 attempts for 50 yards and rushed for 82 yards. Leake led the defense with 12 tackles and blocked a kick.
Elsberry Soccer – Indians lost two of four games played recently. Ben Rhodes scored the only goal in a 7-1 loss to Lutheran. Against Winfield in double overtime 3-2 win, Elsberry. Alex Henke scored a game-tying goal and Rhoades kicked in the winner. Also scoring was Seferino Gonzalez. They lost 4-2 in a game which went back and forth. Rhoades and Mason Cameron scored for the Indians.
They then posted a 5-1 win over Montgomery R-II with Rhoades getting the hat trick (3 goals). Brennen Slaughter and Dalton Barber also scored goals.
They then lost a 1-0 tough game to St. Charles.
Elsberry hosted the conference championship event in cross country and placed second behind Bowling Green. Naomi Gladney placed fourth (22:53), earning all-conference recognition. Maggie Spratt placed 10th (24:26), also earning all-conference medal.
Also competing for Elsberry included Anne Marie Bufford, Mandy Horne, Allie Smith and Ann Heintzelman. Jack Weakly and Austin King competed in the boys’ division.
Several Elsberry softball players received all-conference honors in the East Missouri Conference. They included: Becca Almus, pitcher (unanimous); Brittni Hagemeier, catcher; Kaity Grills, infielder; Brea Johnson, Tanner Bencomo, second team.
Silex was represented in the EMO Conference cross country meet held at Sun Valley Golf Course near Elsberry. Running in the girls’ division included: Brandi Peasel, Olivia Boenker and Sarah Hudson. Competing in the boys’ division were Matt Huber, Matt Colbert, Nick Kientzy, Chase Groshong, James Lasater and Colton Groshong.
Girls named recently to the all-conference team included: Ashley Brown, utility; Rachel Lipsey, Brittany Howard, second team.
Lady Owls named to the all-district team: Melanie Miller, pitcher; Ashley Brown, Brittany Howard; Rachel Lipsey, all unanimous selections.
