Area teams experience season ending losses

The curtain came down for several teams recently for the fall sports season with losses in district play.

Troy Buchanan football ended with a 49-6 loss to highly ranked Francis Howell. This was the second loss to the Vikings suffered by the Trojans this year. Howell dominated the action from the outset, earning a 35-0 lead at the half and 42-0 after three periods. The Trojans broke through into the scoring column with 9:26 left to play when Justin Sutphin scored from one-yard out. Howell’s Sutton Smith scored three TDs and Brett Siebenshuh threw for two TDs to lead the Vikings. Howell held a 314-243 edge in total offense but only a 14-121 edge in first downs. For Troy, Devon Fuller rushed for 80 yards and threw for 22 yards. Sutphin had 84 yards rushing in the game.

The Trojans finished with a 3-7 record.

Winfield Warriors also ran into a strong Duchesne squad and came away with a 53-121 loss to the Pioneers. The Pioneers led 26-0 in the opening period before Damian Cagle scored on a 45-yard run for Winfield. The Warriors also scored in the fourth period on a 7 –yard pass from Cagle to Chandler Hollingsworth with 6:35 left to play. The Pioneers were led by Trevor Korba who scored four TDs and 137 yards rushing.

The Warriors finished with a 3-7 mark.

In volleyball, Troy Buchanan defeated Hannibal in the district held at Columbia Rock Bridge. This advanced them to the next round where they lost to Jefferson City Helias. Winfield played in the district at St. Dominic. They defeated Warrenton in the opening round before losing to St. Dominic.
