Secretary of State Jason Kander announced that his office has expanded opportunities for Missourians to provide comment for initiative petitions.
“These changes are one more aspect of my efforts to increase transparency and accountability throughout state government,” Kander said. “From instituting the public comment period to creatingTheMissouriChannel.com, I have worked to make it easier for Missourians to keep tabs on the inner workings of their own state government and elected representatives.”
As a result of Kander’s changes, the public comment period for initiative petitions will increase from five to 15 days, and Missourians will now be able to see petitions online at www.sos.mo.gov/commentwithin 24 hours of when they are received.

Before circulating petitions, state law requires that groups must first have the form of their petition approved by the secretary of state’s office. The office then has 10 days after the form of the petitions is approved to draft ballot language. During this time, the office will review all comments.
