Fire forces relocation of businesses
High winds created additional challenges for area firefighters Sunday afternoon as a fire ravaged the northern end of a business complex off Professional Park Drive in Troy. Firefighters remained on the scene through 6 p.m. Highway 61 was closed for a brief time.
A fire Nov. 17 destroyed the suites of three businesses and heavily damaged a fourth in a business complex off Professional Parkway in Troy. A firewall and the efforts of several fire districts prevented even more extensive damage to the remaining businesses in the center. Heavy winds also created more dangerous situations for the firefighters and eventually led to the temporary closing of Highway 61. Winds carried embers across the highway and represented a potential threat.
Barry Nuss, fire marshal with the Lincoln County Fire Protection District, said the department responded to the scene after receiving a fire call at approximately 12:50 p.m. Bart Berneking, owner of BBI, one of the affected businesses and a law enforcement officer were among those calling. Berneking was working in his office at the time and smelled smoke. He went outside and saw the flames.
When the department arrived, the building was fully involved. A call was placed for assistance to other departments with several responding. Nuss said over 50 firefighters from neighboring agencies and 18 pieces of equipment fought the blaze until approximately 6 p.m. that evening. They continued the use of water and Class A foam to douse the flames.
Nuss said the investigation by local and state fire officials, including the State Fire Marshal’s office, continues. The fire is not believed to be suspicious but the exact cause has not been determined. Weather has not been ruled out. Several different insurance carriers are involved as each business had a different insurance provider. Nuss believed with his experience with fires, that the fire began in the attic area of the structure.
Nuss did not disclose the total monetary amount of the damages as yet due to the continuing investigation.
