Tis the season for giving, make someone else smile

In Canada, WestJet airlines were able to bring smiles to many passenger’s faces as they were made believers of Santa Claus and the generosity of others. When was the last time someone gave you a gift and you didn’t even know them? I can’t think of a time that I received something from a stranger…unless we are counting Halloween. I certainly can’t think of a time that it has happened to me as an adult at least.

A virtual Santa was in the terminal on screen as the passengers waited to board their flight and many people tried to pass the time by talking to Santa. Did they expect anything from it, no, but it is the season for Christmas, holiday decorations and cheer so they all went along with it, saying what they needed and what they wanted for Christmas.

After their 4-hour flight, passengers waited at baggage claim only to find nicely wrapped presents coming towards them instead of their luggage. Christmas lights lit up the area and music started playing. Tags on the gifts were neatly marked with passenger’s names and shocked faces and smiles became contagious as children picked up their mystery gift with excitement. Santa, the same one from the virtual screen that they had talked to, was in the airport with them. Tears of joy were shed and hugs were graciously passed out as the passengers gave thanks to the WestJet Airlines for their act of kindness. Adults couldn’t believe their eyes as they figured out the gifts weren’t just for the kids. Gifts from socks and underwear to iPods and big screen TVs and airfare home for the holidays were passed out.

During the flight, employees of WestJet split into group to complete the wish lists that were given in the terminal before the passenger’s left for their destination. It was something they had done for the first time and hit the nail right on the head. The whole thing was truly done to bring in more customers, but you have to think that they could have given a discount of tickets or some other promotion…to think that WestJet did all this in just a few hours is really amazing.

I have heard many good things about airlines here that help out with the Make A Wish Foundation and other organizations like them. They make the trip special for the passengers and put on a big production. It’s always nice to know that others are thinking about you. I mean, who wouldn’t want to be at the receiving end of an act of kindness? I know I would and it would be easy to pass on the jester and the good mood after that.
