Pirates feature balance, coast to win over Warriors

A slow start out of the gates was too much to overcome for the Winfield Warriors as they lost 77-42 to the St. Charles Pirates Tuesday in a Gateway Athletic Conference game. David Bauer led Winfield with 22 points, the only Warrior in double figures. He also had seven assists and five rebounds. Valcani followed with seven points. Morfield and Wiggs led the Pirates with 20 and 15 points respectively. Morfield also had eight assists. The Pirates featured a more balanced attack on offense with two others also finishing in double figures.

The Pirates raced to an 18-8 lead in the opening quarter and maintained an edge over the next three quarters to coast to a comfortable win.

“St. Charles is a very good team that is well coached,” said Coach Seth McDowell. “We got off to a terrible start and when you turn the ball over you are basically giving them two points because they convert those turnovers to easy points. We have to do a better job of taking care of the ball and not giving the other team so many easy shots.”
