Faria sentenced to life in prison for murder
Russell Faria, of Troy, was sentenced Dec. 23, to term of life in prison plus 30 years for the murder of his wife, Elizabeth.
A jury last month found Faria guilty of first-degree murder and armed criminal action.
Elizabeth Faria was found dead in her home near Troy on Dec. 27, 2011. She had been stabbed multiple times with a kitchen knife. The murder weapon was protruding from her neck when she was found. Faria called 911 after finding his wife’s body and initi
ally had told responders that his wife had committed suicide. She was undergoing chemotherapy treatments for cancer at the time of her death.
Russell Faria was arrested one day after his wife’s funeral.
Russell Faria’s attorney, Joel Schwartz, has requested a new trial which was denied by Judge Chris Kunza Mennemeyer. He will contend that some evidence he has was not allowed into evidence. Schwartz also plans to appeal the verdict.
The life sentence has no possibility of parole and the 30-year sentence will run consecutively.
