Daughter seeks assistance for mother burned out of home, battling cancer

The daughter of a woman burned out of her home recently is seeking assistance in helping her get back on her feet.

Carol Werner lost everything in a fire. Her daughter, Amy Gonzales provided details of the challenges her mother has been facing in recent months.

“My mother was diagnosed with Stage 1 cancer in October,” she wrote. “She had surgery in November to remove it. She was told in December that it was currently Stage 3 and would have to undergo six months of chemotherapy. She is currently on her second month. On the 17th of January she had to put her long time companion dog down due to injury and age. On Saturday morning, the 25th, she was informed that her house was on fire. She works at night and was not home. Her little dog was, however, and perished in the fire.

“Anyone who knows my mom knows how caring she is. She has taken care of elderly families in the Troy area for over 15 years. She is a local artist and has donated her works to charities. She is an avid animal lover, often taking care of people’s pets while on vacations, and taking in strays and orphaned animals brought to her. She always helps those in need, and now she needs help desperately.”

It is unknown whether her home has the ability to be repaired. There is no insurance to cover her home. She is homeless.

Gonzales, who works for the Air Force, lives in Florida and flew up to assist.

“A friend created a Facebook page to accept items to auction. Proceeds going to my mom. Also, there is a page for monetary donations for those willing and wanting to donate. For those local and wanting to donate, Bank of Old Monroe has an account opened in her behalf.” All details are listed below.
