Do your neighbors respect your property?

Winter seems to be looming in the area and most people are ready for warmer temperatures. Becoming impatient with spring’s arrival isn’t unusual for me, but this year Punxsutawney Phil’s prediction stung a little when hearing about six more weeks of winter. I know, it was going to happen regardless, but did we all have to say it out loud? The harsh winds and the negative temperatures have had many people stuck inside during the winter…even the kids on their “snow days”. It’s hard to even think about going outside when frostbite can settle in as quickly as 15 minutes with some of the recent wind chills.

I understand just as much as the next person that going outside in the cold is not a cup of tea, but strangely I have noticed more and more trash scattered about my yard and down the street. I’m not sure if it’s the fact that since so many trash cans are outside that the walk to pick up a blown over can or to secure a lid is just too much to bare, or if it’s people just littering and not caring about having a clean environment and nice looking yard. On my street my house is one of the only houses down a long stretch with the garage protruding out from the rest of the house. This seems to create a nice little catch-all for plastic sandwich containers, hamburger bun bags, soda boxes, hotdog wrappers and anything else you can name. It has become such a problem that for four days straight I picked up someone else’s trash from my yard. I can’t stress enough how much that grosses me out! I always make sure that our trash can is placed on even grounds so that it is less likely to blow over, and our recycling is inside our garage. I find it very strange that someone can let their trash just cover the streets, but it seems to be a weekly problem. I’m sure I’m not the only person experiencing this, and it’s probably not the first time it has happened, but this year seems to top others for one reason or another.

I have noticed as the snow melted that even more trash has occurred along the sides of the road. When did it become okay to throw trash out of your car window or to let it blow out of your truck bed? If everyone would do their own part in keeping their grounds clean, Lincoln County could be so much better. I hope that this spring and summer I don’t encounter the same problem and have to pick chip bags and candy wrappers from my flowers and clean up wrapping paper from my trees. It just seems like a waste to litter the ground which we try so hard to keep nice. I ask that everyone make sure they are cleaning up after their selves and take that extra couple of steps to the trashcan instead of cleaning out your car while you are driving. Be aware of others and their space and hopefully they will do the same in return.
