Nielsen and Schaper tie the knot at 93
Evalyn Rose Nielsen married Rev. Melvin Louise Schaper on October 26, 2013 at the Calvary Bible Fellowship Church in Oklahoma City, Okla. Officiating was Melvin’s son Rev. Albert Shaper with Rev. Jerry Schenck assisting.
Both were in missionary work with Evalyn serving in Bolivia and Melvin serving on the island of Grenada in the West Indies. Both were 93 years old at the time of the service with Melvin being 14 days older than Evalyn. Melvin’s granddaughter introduced them to each other. Their previous companions had passed three and five years respectively before they got together and decided to finish their race together.
Melvin is the oldest son of Albert and Willie Schaper, living on a farm southwest of Troy. He received his formal education in the Hawk Point and Troy school. He went to college at God’s Bible College, University of Cincinnati in Ohio and Greenville College in Illinois. He did graduate work at Biblical Seminary in N.Y., Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, Ky., Princeton Theology Seminary in Princeton, N.J., Pittsburg University in Pittsburg, Kan. He received three master’s degrees and later received an Honorary Doctorate of Ministries Degree from the college department of God’s Bible College in Ann, Ohio. Melvin taught at Independence Bible School for 13 years and was superintendent of the schools for an interim term of two years. He also served as a pastor in various churches in Kan., Mo., Grenada, and Okla. He served as pastor at the Troy Holiness Church from 1982 to 1986.
He helped start the school in Independence, Kan. and was the founder of the Secondary School in Grenada.
Now Melvin and Evalyn, a painter, are planning a return visit to Grenada. Melvin says, “God knew Evalyn wanted a husband and knew I needed a wife. So God put us together.” They are currently residing in Ochelata, Okla.
