Silex splits Homecoming games, Lady Owls lose in first round
The Silex Lady Owls saw their season end last week with a loss to South Shelby in the Class 2 district at Clopton.
It was Homecoming on Feb. 21 as well as Senior Night/Homecoming. “The gym was as packed as I have ever seen it,” said Coach Ryan Flanagan. “As a coach and a player, the environment was exhilarating and the girls rose to the occasion.”
They played Montgomery County and won 52-50 in a thriller.
“We came out of the gate and played extremely well, up six at half,” said Flanagan. “In the third quarter we struggled putting the ball in the hole and had some costly turnovers. At one point in the fourth, we were losing by five, but the girls dug in and got some huge steals and converted them into transition points. Brittany (Howard) and Michele (Norton) took the game over late and lead us to the victory.”
Howard finished with 17, Michele Norton (12), and Elly Boothe (12).
It was a short turn around because Silex played Community R-VI on Saturday afternoon and lost 47-58.
“We struggled to score early and were down (17-27) at the half,” said the coach. “We were down by 20 at one point but the girls never gave up and closed the gap to seven with two minutes left in the game.”
Marcie Norton really lead the way for Silex scoring 12 points, 10 of which came in the second half. She was followed by Anna Hopkins with 10 and Brittany Howard with nine.
“Community really struggled with our full court pressure in the second half and my girls executed the best they have the entire season in the second half,” Flanagan said. I am very proud of my girls effort. They left their hearts out there on the floor in their final home game of the season.”
In the first round of districts, Silex lost 50-40 to South Shelby. “The girls played hard the entire game and left it on the floor,” said Flanagan. We struggled to score the basketball from point blank and we struggled at the free throw line. That turned out to be our demise in the game because we had opportunities and executed our offenses and defenses extremely well, but we couldn’t put the ball through the hoop.”
Brittany Howard lead the team with 13 points.
“Also, I was honored to have one player selected to the all-conference team. Senior Brittany Howard was selected second team all-conference. For a girl who never saw a varsity floor until this season she had a very memorable season. All due to her work ethic and determination.”
“Lastly, the season didn’t end the way the girls or myself anticipated, but I am extremely proud of the way they responded to adversity. Whether it was having limited numbers or injuries. The group of girls we had at Silex worked hard everyday in practice and every night we played.”
In the boys’ games, the Owls lost to Clopton (50-39). Leading scorers for Silex were Matt Huber and Levi MIller wih 14 and 10 points each. They defeated Wright City 33-31 with Huber scoring 13 points. They lost to Montgomery County 84-51. They were led again by Huber 14 and Miller had 13 points. Huber and Miller again scored 14 and 10 respectively in a 84-51 loss to Montgomery R-II. In the first round in districts, they posted a 54-47 win over Wellsville. Huber had 15 points followed by James Lasater, Miller and Corey Mudd with 11 points each.
