Lincoln County Associate Circuit Judge Ben Burkemper was recently appointed by Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Missouri, Richard Teitelman, as a special judge to hear and decide two civil cases at the Missouri Supreme Court in Jefferson City on January 11, 2012.

Special judges are assigned to serve on the Supreme Court when a current judge is unavailable or recuses himself or herself from the hearing the case.  When such a recusal occurs, those vacancies are generally filled by judges from the three districts of the Court of Appeals.  “As a trial judge, I consider it a great honor and privilege to be considered and selected as a special judge on the Supreme Court of Missouri, the state’s highest court. It is certainly one of the highlights of my judicial career,” Burkemper said.

The civil cases that Judge Burkemper will hear involve matters from both the Court of Appeals in the Eastern District (based in St. Louis) and the Western District (based in Kansas City) and address issues of general interest and importance and for the purpose of reexamining existing law.
