Five are inducted into Trojan Elite status at Troy Buchanan High School

Five former athletes at Troy Buchanan High School were the initial inductees into the new “Trojan Elite” which recognizes athletic and academic achievement.

“At this time we would like to recognize a special group of Trojan Alumni, which will form our high school’s first group of inductees into the Trojan Elite,” said Jason Smith, activities director. “This group of individuals are being recognized and honored as Trojan Elite members by participating in three sports for all four years at Troy Buchanan. They earned at least eight letters, were all-conference or all-district in at least two sports and had a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better.

“In the days of specializing in sports, we wanted to honor individuals that not only participated in multiple sports, but excelled at them while still maintaining a high GPA.”

The five included Brian Alkire, Ben Chaney, Emily Crane, Casey Hopkins and Kyle Peasel.

Alkire was a three sport athlete participating in football, basketball, and baseball. In football, Alkire was a three year letterman, named team MVP his junior and senior seasons, first team all-conference kicker, first team all-conference defensive back and honorable mention all-conference quarterback. In basketball Brian was a three year letterman, Post Dispatch all district, finished second in St. Louis metro area in three point field goals made with 83 and fourth in free throw percentage at 85 percent his senior season. He was also a member of the 1988 Final 4 Team. His baseball accolades include four year letterman, led St. Louis area in batting with a .636 batting avg. his senior season and in the classroom. He maintained a 3.33 GPA.

Casey Hopkins is a 1999 graduate. Casey participated in football, basketball and golf and maintained a 3.77 GPA. His accomplishments included basketball- two year letterman, second team All-Lincoln County, All-Tournament Team in the Smith Cotton Invitational; Trojan Award – Chosen by the coaches for hard work, dedication and team mentality; member of the 1999 Final Four Team. In football, three year letterman, all-conference honorable mention QB, all-conference second team defensive back, Trojan Award – Award voted on by teammates for the person who exhibited hard work and leadership. And in golf, Casey was: three years varsity, member of the state qualifying team as a sophomore, all conference and all district his junior and senior seasons, honorable mention All-Metro his junior and senior seasons, state qualifier as an individual his junior and senior seasons, finished 25th at state his junior year.

Casey was also a member of the National Honor Society and FBLA.

Kyle Peasel is a 2009 graduate. Kyle maintained a 3.36 GPA while participating in football, basketball and golf.

Kyle’s accomplishments include: Football- four year letterman, all-conference second team offense and defense as a junior, all-conference and all-district first team offense and defense as a senior. In basketball- three year letterman, all-conference honorable mention his junior year, All-Metro honorable mention his senior year, all-conference and all-region first team as a senior, regional and IAABO Player of the Year as a senior. And in golf Kyle was: three year letterman, all-conference his senior year.

Kyle just completed his football playing career at the University of Missouri

Emily Crane is a 2012 graduate. Emily maintained a 3.92 GPA while participating in softball, basketball and soccer.

Emily’s accomplishments include: Basketball- three year letterman. In Soccer she was: four year letterman, all-conference first team as a junior, all-district first team as a freshman and junior, Quincy Notre Dame All-Tournament team her freshman year. In softball: four year letterman, Missouri Gatorade Player of the Year her senior season, Missouri state record holder in single season hits (63), Missouri state record holder in career hits (205), Missouri state record holder in career runs scored (168), St. Louis Post-Dispatch All-Metro Player of the Year her senior season, St. Louis Post-Dispatch All-Metro First Team – junior and senior seasons, St. Louis Post-Dispatch All-Metro second Team as a sophomore, All-State first team infield as a senior, All-State first team outfield as a sophomore and junior, All-Region first team all four years, All-District first team all four years, Gateway Athletic Conference (GAC) South Player of the Year junior and senior seasons, GAC South first team all-conference all four years, member of the 2011 state champions.

Last year Emily was a member of the USA Junior Olympic Softball Team and is a current member of the University of Missouri Softball Team.

Ben Chaney is from the class of 2013. Ben participated in football, basketball, baseball and golf while attending Troy Buchanan. He graduated with a 3.99 grade point average and was the class salutatorian.

Ben’s Accomplishments include: In the sport of golf: one year letterman.

In the sport of baseball: two year Letterman.

In basketball Ben was: a four year letterman, Member of the 2011 Final Four Team, first team all-conference and all district his junior and senior seasons, All Lincoln County Team his junior and senior seasons, Lincoln County Player of the year his senior, FZN all-tournament team his junior and senior seasons

And In the sport of football Ben was: a four year letterman, all-conference honorable mention safety his sophomore year, all-conference honorable mention punter and quarterback his junior season, all-district second team safety his senior Season, all-conference first team safety his junior and senior seasons, all-conference second team quarterback his senior season.

Ben is playing football for Truman State University.
