A Mass of Christian Burial for John Joseph George Shaffer, 80, of Elsberry, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 30, 2014, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Elsberry.  Father Charles Tichacek, church pastor, will officiate with burial in the Elsberry City Cemetery in Elsberry.

Mr. Shaffer passed away late Saturday night, April 26, 2014, at DePaul Hospital in Bridgeton.

Born Nov. 2, 1933, in St. Louis, he was the son of Clayton Paul and Regina Agnes Kaufman Shaffer.  He was united in marriage on May 1, 1954, in St. Louis to Doris Mae Kalschutz.  This union was blessed with seven children:  John, Jennifer, William, Chris, Michael, David and Mary.  John and Doris moved their family to Elsberry in 1976.

He was employed as a supervisor at Forrest Keeling Nursery near Elsberry for 35 years, retiring in 2007. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus in Elsberry.

Survivors include five sons: John C. Shaffer and his wife, Cindy, of Foley, William Shaffer, of Elsberry, Chris Shaffer and his wife, Kendra, of Bowling Green, Michael Shaffer and David Shaffer, both of Elsberry; two daughters: Jennifer Jensen, of Emporium, Kan., and Mary Watkins, of Elsberry; 11 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. He also leaves one brother, William Shaffer and his wife, Jackie, of Des Moines, Iowa; several in-laws, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Visitation was held from 4 – 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, 2014 at Carter-Ricks Funeral Home in Elsberry.  A Knights of Columbus Service was held during the visitation at the funeral home.

B JoAnn (DeMott) Sherwood,78, of Troy, formerly of Lewistown, Ill. passed away on Sunday,  April 20, 2014.

JoAnn was born on July 8,1935 in Abingdon, Ill.  to Charles and Jessie (McCullough) DeMott. After graduating from Lewistown High School, she met and later married  Richard Sherwood on June 6, 1953.To this union were born two children: Paula and Kathy.

JoAnn worked at various jobs including: The Subway Cafe in Astoria, K-Mart in Canton, Ill., and Calvins Restaurant in Troy, as a hostess. She was a member of IL Square Dance Callers Association, Peoria Area Callers Association, Tribal Squares -Square Dance Club of Lewistown, Ill.  and Square Dance Developers  Square Dance Club of Morton, Ill.

Survivors include one daughter; Kathy and husband, David Rhodes, of Troy; six grandchildren: Jessica and husband, Jason Vuylsteke, Joseph and Molly Rhodes, Jodelle Rhodes, Michael and  Nicole Stahl, Matthew and Monica Stahl, Ashley and husband Jason Barclay; nine great-granchildren: Caleb Loveless, Christoper Loveless, Morgan Vuylsteke, Nathan Stahl, William Stahl, Jacey Barclay, Brody Barclay, Savannah Stahl, Sophia Stahl; one sister, Jeanne and husband Dick Seward; two brothers; Larry and wife, Carole DeMotte and John K. DeMotte and many other relatives and friends.

Visitation was held on Thursday, April 24, 2014 from 6-9 p.m. at McCoy-Blossom Funeral & Cremation Center 1304 Boone Street Troy.

Graveside Service  was held Friday, April 25, 2014 – 1 p.m.,  Providence Cemetery in Lewistown, Ill.

Dyllan T. Wansing, 25, of Troy, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, April 25, 2014 at his residence.

He was born on Sept. 26, 1988, in Troy to David and Tamara (Luck) Wansing.

After attending the local schools, Dyllan worked as a laborer for a tree trimming company. Dyllan was a talented artist and drew sketches of everything.  His love of family was evident in all that he did.

He is survived by his beloved parents; mother, Tamara Luck and her partner, Will Biship of Troy, his father, David Wansing and his partner, Melissa Summer, of Troy; his fiancee’, Becky Bote; his sons: Blake Micheal Wansing age 3, and due to arrive on June 4, 2014, Hayden Scott Wansing, all of Troy; his brother, Brady Morrision of Troy, his uncle Tracey Luck and wife Pam of Troy, He is further survived by his grandparents Cheryl Johnson of Troy, Charles Wansing of Sedalia and Rosetta Foster of Jefferson City, several aunts, uncles, cousins and  many friends who loved him very much.

Visitation  was scheduled from 4-9 p.m. on Tuesday, April 29, 2014 and also visitation on Wednesday April 30 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. funeral at the McCoy-Blossom Funeral & Cremation Ctr, 1304 Boone St., Troy.

Funeral will be  held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at McCoy-Blossom Funeral & Cremation  Center, Troy.  Rev. Darrell Alley will officiated.

Funeral services for Charlene Wolfe, 69, of Elsberry, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 3, 2014 at the Elsberry United Methodist Church under the direction of Carter-Ricks Funeral Home in Elsberry.  Rev. Brenda Cockrell, pastor of the Centennial United Methodist Church, will officiate. Inurnment will be in the Elsberry City Cemetery at a later date.

Mrs. Wolfe passed away early Saturday morning, April 26, 2014 at Barnes St. Peters Hospital in St. Peters.

Born Jan. 24, 1945, in Troy, she was the daughter of Edward and Isabell Webster Steele.  She was raised in Elsberry where she was a member of the EHS Class of 1963 until her senior year when she was in a car accident. After recovering from injuries, Charlene graduated with the class of 1964 from Elsberry High School. She was a former member of the Elsberry Jaycees. She was united in marriage on Aug. 27, 1967 in Elsberry to Wendell Houston Wolfe.  She earned her CNA and worked in area nursing homes for many years.  Charlene was a member of the Centennial United Methodist Church in Elsberry, where she served on the Pastor-Parish Committee and was a member of the United Methodist Women.

Survivors include one brother, Milford Steele and his wife, Vivian, of Elsberry; one sister, Marsleen Kerr and her husband, Curtis, Sr., of Elsberry; one nephew, Charles Steel, Jr. and his wife, Susan; and five nieces: Michelle Steele, Frieda Powell, Glenda Steele, Marlena Davis and Curtissa Kerr Hunter (who lived in Charlene’s home during her teenage years) and her husband, Allen.  She also leaves her uncle Luther Steele, of Wright City; one aunt-in-law, Lula Belle Webb, of Louisiana; several great-nieces, great-nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until time of the service at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 3, 2014 at the Elsberry United Methodist Church in Elsberry.
