Elsberry survivors team plans something new at Komen race

This year the Elsberry Survivors Komen Race Team formed by Elsberry resident Margie Koch will be doing things a little bit differently.

For years now Koch has been taking her team to St. Louis by bus in order to participate in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.

This year the team is still forming, but there have been some changes.

“I’m doing something different this year,” said Koch. “We will be having a fun walk at Page Branch Park in conjunction with their 5k race and Touch-a-Truck event.”

This means that Koch will not be hiring a bus to take team members and their families to St. Louis as she has in the past.

Anyone who wants to go to that particular race is of course still welcome to sign up for the team, but Koch said they are on their own when it comes to transportation.

The fun walk that Koch and her team are participating in this year at Page Branch Park will take place on June 21 at 10 a.m.

In this way, members of the community have a choice. They can participate in the Komen race in St. Louis on June 14 with the rest of Koch’s team, join in the fun walk at Page Branch Park on June 21 or show up for both.

“This will give people a chance to participate here in our own community without having to get up with the chickens and leave town at 5 a.m.,” said Koch.

Koch said she is dedicating this year’s race to the memory of her friend Cheryl Cheek. Thelma Boedeker will also be honored as a 10-year cancer survivor.

Koch said she is hoping to be named one of this year’s top 10 fundraisers so that she can pass the honor of carrying the team’s banner on to Boedeker.

Individuals who are interested in participating can register for the team at www.komenstlouis.org. Online registration needs to be completed by May 28.

“I do have paper registrations and donation forms,” said Koch. “They have to be back to me by May 16 so I can have them in the mail by the 20th.”
