Elva M. Currie, 90, of Elsberry, passed away on Tuesday, June 10, 2014, at Elsberry Health Care Center in Elsberry.

She was born on June 21, 1923, in Elsberry to Tom and Sarah (Luckett) Colbert. After attending the local schools, Elva met and later married Robert Currie on Nov. 26, 1947. To this union were born two children: Dennis and Deborah.

Elva was a hard worker and worked at the glove factory in Elsberry and also in retail at Sears in St. Louis.

Elva is survived by her loving family: her son Dennis and wife, Lois Currie, of House Springs; her daughter Deborah and husband Craig Brookshire of Grand Rapids, Mich. ,three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, June 14, 2014 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., at the McCoy-Blossom Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Troy.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 14, 2014, 2 p.m., at the funeral home.  Officiating will be Rev. John Zellmer

Interment will follow in Sulphur Lick Cemetery, Troy.

Military service for Jerry Michael Holmes, of Troy, was  held June 5, 2014, at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis. Mr. Holmes, 71, passed away May 31 at his home.

Born Nov. 17, 1942, in St. Louis, he was the son of Homer (Red) Holmes and Adrain Woodward Holmes.  He serviced his country in the United States Navy from December 1959 until he was honorably discharged  in December, 1963, then transferred from active duty  to Naval Reserve until January 1966. He served his four years as a seaman on the battleship the U.S.S. Canberra.

He was united in marriage to Martha Hallum in August 1987 in Pacific, Mo.

He was in the automobile business retiring as the finance manager at Royal Gate Dodge in Manchester. He and his wife moved to Ellington, Mo. In 1991 on his parents’ cattle farm. They moved to Troy in 2005.

His survivors include his beloved wife, Martha, of Troy, they were married 26 years; his sister, Janet Voege, of Ellington; nephew, Donald Homes and niece, Susan Agers”, both of Fenton; his sons, Jeff Holmes and wife, Melody, Columbia, Robert Hallum, of Canton, Geo., Terry Hallum and wife, Jenny, of Naples, Fla.; daughters, Julie Walton and husband, Mike, of Florrisant and Lee Ann Brown, of Warsaw, Mo.; grandsons, Drew Pomeroy Hallum, of Bay City, Mich, Jacob Brown and Caleb Brown, both of Moscow Mills, Shane Walton and Garrett Walton, both of Florissant; granddaughters, Jessica, of  Florissant, Courtney Holmes ad Alissa Holmes, both of Columbia, Arianna and Lauren Hallum, both of Naples, Fla. And great grandson, Oliver Brown, of Moscow Mills.

 

Visitation and Remembrance of Life for William Jay “Bill” Miller, 53,  of Foley, was held from 6– 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at Carter-Ricks Funeral Home near Winfield.

Mr. Miller, 53, passed away Friday afternoon, June 6, 2014 at St. Joseph Hospital West in Lake Saint Louis.

Born July 7, 1960 in St. Louis, he was the son of James Russell and Shirley Jean Williams Miller.  He was united in marriage in 1990 in Troy to Joetta Lynn Holt.

He worked as a local truck driver for C & J Trucking.

Survivors include two children, Dustin and Ashley Miller, of Winfield; his wife, Joetta Miller; one sister, Karen Kyle, of St. Charles; and three brothers: James Wayne Miller and his wife, Vickie, of O’Fallon, Steven Miller and his companion, Debbie, of Foley and Daniel Miller and his wife, Joyce, of Eolia,.  He also leaves several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Virginia Lorene Riffle. 101, of Elsberry,  will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 12, 2014, at Carter-Ricks Funeral Home in Elsberry.  Rev. Tom Schofield, pastor of Elsberry First Christian Church, and Rev. Bob Norvel, pastor of Annada Community Christian Church, will officiate Burial will  follow in Corinth Cemetery near Foley.

Mrs. Riffle passed away Sunday night, June 8, 2014, at the Elsberry Health Care Center near Elsberry.

Born Dec. 17, 1912, in St. Louis, she was the daughter of Eugene W. and Sarah E. Suddarth Montgomery.  She was united in marriage on April 21, 1932, in East St. Louis, Ill. to Nicholas M. “Nick” Riffle.  This union was blessed with one son, Ronald.

Virginia owned Riffle Hallmark Store for many years, retiring in 1976.  She was a member of the First Christian Church since 1927, where she served as Deacon Emeritus and was a member of Christian Women’s Fellowship.  She was also a member of the Elsberry Bridge Clubs and the Jesse Black Club.

Survivors include one son, Ronald G. Riffle and his wife, Sue, of Troy; one grandson, Ronald G. Riffle, II “Chip” of Kansas City; and one great-grandson, Nicholas R. Riffle of Kansas City.  She also leaves her close friend, Jean Temple Steward of Ballwin; four nephews: Eugene “Sonny” Montgomery and his wife, Ella Mae, of Texas, Tom Montgomery and his wife, Anita, of Idaho, Todd Montgomery and his wife, Shawn, of California and Jon Montgomery and his wife, Yvonne, of Wyoming; many other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be  held from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Thursday, June 12, 2014 at Carter-Ricks Funeral Home in Elsberry.
