Did you know every two seconds someone in the United States needs blood? Every day, 44,000 units of blood are needed to treat patients at U.S. hospitals. The need is constant.
Did you know each blood donation has the potential to save up the three lives? Your donation can be separated into red blood cells, plasma and platelets to treat patients with different needs. The gratification is instant.
The average adult’s body contains 10 to 12 pints of blood. When you donate blood, you give about one pint. Your body replenishes that donated pint in 24 hours.
There is no substitute that covers all the needs of human blood transfusion. Current blood substitutes are only designed for oxygen carrying capacity, they have no effect on the ability of blood to clot or prevent hemorrhaging.
Only about 38 percent of the population is eligible to give blood. Of those eligible, only eight percent actually donate. Give blood.
