IndianHawks win first game in record setting effort

Clopton IndianHawks ‘blew out’ the scoreboard Sept. 14, defeating Principia 64-36 in their Homecoming game. It was their first win of the season and the first for Coach Lynn Nutt.

“We were very excited to have another game at home and of course the Homecoming festivities helped our level of excitement before the game,” said Nutt.

It showed, as the IndianHawks scored three touchdowns on their first three possessions of the game. All three TD’s were scored on the ground, QB Jack Hicks (2) and RB/WR Charles Fraction (1).

If the first quarter was any indication as to how the night was to play out it appeared as if the IndianHawks were to run away from the Panthers. However, Principia had different plans.

“We were extremely happy with how we executed on the offensive side of the ball, and being able to sub in a few more people this week helped us stay fresh,” said Coach Nutt.

Down 22-6 after the first quarter, the Panthers roared back scoring three TDs in the second quarter. A 30 yard bomb from QB Matthew Gilman to WR Will Allen and then two rushing TDs by Gilman.

The IndianHawks also added two scores in the second on a two yard run by Hicks and a receiving TD by Fraction. At the end of the half it was all tied up 30-30.

“Defensively, we were very happy with how we were able to stop the run early, especially after last week. Principia did a great job of adjusting to our defense after the first quarter and unfortunately we weren’t able to make adjustments until halftime, but Coach [Cary] Bibb did a great job making some minor changes that worked out for us the rest of the game.”

The second half belonged to the Indian-Hawks as they came out with a quick TD at the 10:07 mark on a quick pass from Hicks to Porter.

Principia answered back with a 52 yard pass to WR Eddie Bargmann. Clopton-Elsberry added another eight points on a two yard pass to Fraction and then two rushing TD’s in the fourth quarter by Hicks and Fraction to give them a new IndianHawks single game record for most points (64).

The IndianHawks defense played solid in the second half holding the Panthers to only six points.
