The Veterans Coffee Talk was started almost two years ago. The first meeting hosted around 20 veterans sitting around
telling stories. On Thursday, November 8, 2012, the veterans Coffee Talk has had 215 veterans (not at one time) attend since the start of the talk. The morning tradition has gathered 30 WWII veterans enjoying the camaraderie of other veterans.
Since the growth of the coffee talk, a Marine Corps Detachment League has formed for Lincoln and Pike Counties, inviting all Marines active, reserve, retired, honorably discharged, and FMF corpsman to join. The coffee talk and the WWII and Korean veterans have teamed up with Central Missouri Honor Flight Program based out of Columbia Mo. The veterans rely on donations throughout the community to have the opportunity to fly to Washington and visit the memorials dedicated to their sacrifices to our country.
The Central Missouri Honor Flight has made 21 Honor flights and has sent 1,333 veterans to Washington. The program has raised around $1.5 million in donations through grassroots effort and communities. Lincoln County has been a generous donor, as they have sent numerous veterans and caretakers on the Central Missouri Honor Flight Program.
The veterans coffee talk meets every Thursday at 9 a.m. at the L.C.C.O.A. Building on Hwy. J and Hwy 47. The Marine Corps League Detachment meets on Thursday morning at coffee talk and at 7 p.m. at the VFW Post 8828 located at 440 Hwy. J.
