To celebrate the start of the 2012 NFL season, schools were encouraged to participate in the NFL PLAY 60 Super School contest and submit three essays explaining how they planned to show their NFL team pride and incorporate football into their lesson plans. Schools were also asked to demonstrate their commitment to youth health and wellness by submitting essays on their school’s physical education environment and how they teach their students about the importance of being active and eating right.

William Cappel Elementary School, Troy R-III School District was one of the Winning schools that received a $10,000 NFL PLAY 60 grant for health and wellness programming or equipment and a visit from NFL players.

On Dec. 4, 2012 St. Louis Rams Wide Receiver, Brandon Gibson and Tackle Roger Saffold, along with St. Louis Rams Cheerleaders and Mascot “Rampage”,  presented William Cappel Elementary and PE Coach Jodi Musterman with a check for $10,000 and exercised with the kids for one hour.

“Its exciting to be a part of this and fun to watch the students really get after it. This was my first Play 60 event and I have no problem doing it again,” says Gibson.

The WCE students and staff worked hard to achieve the grant provided by NFL Play 60 and worked hard and exercised for one hour once they were named one of the 2012 Super Schools.

“It was an honor to win this award. The Play 60 program is an excellent resource and support system for Physical Education programs across the nation. It re-emphasizes the importance of active play in a child’s life. We as educators know that active, healthy children make better learners. The NFL realizes this too and is very supportive of keeping PE programs in schools and an important part of a school curriculum. It was also fun to see the response of the students to the Rams players. Cappel is a school that teaches healthy lifestyles everyday, but when a 6’5”, 314 pound football player tells them to exercise and eat right the message really gets through!” says Jodi Musterman, WCE PE Educator.

“The NFL Play 60 Grant is an amazing opportunity to help provide our students additional equipment to continue to promote health and wellness in their everyday lives. Hosting the Rams players and the affiliated companies was an amazing experience for both our staff and students. It was through the hard work and dedication of many individuals to make this $10,000 grant a reality. This is one of the many reasons that working with and for William Cappel Elementary is an honor and a privilege,” says Principal Phil Brock.

Fifty WCE students had a gym session with PE teacher Jodi Musterman, Gibson, Saffold, Rampage, St. Louis Cheerleaders and Principal Phil Brock and Assistant Principal Megan Crawmer. They were presented a check.
