Winfield JV girls win track championship

Winfield’s Varsity and JV Boys and Junior varsity Girls Track team competed in the GAC North Conference meet Tuesday, May 7 at Orchard Farm High School. The boys teams competed well, with many new personal bests. However, they were outshined by the girls’ junior varsity team which were crowned conference champions, beating their closest competitor by 52 points.     On Thursday, May 9, Winfield hosted Elsberry in Winfield’s final home game of the year. Winfield scored late in the first half off of a corner kick to go into halftime with a 1-0 lead.     Troy Buchanan goalkeeper Tiffany Hazelwonder makes stop in win over Wentzville Holt in district action.

    The baseball and soccer seasons came to a close for Troy Buchanan and Winfield last week with losses in district competition. In baseball, Winfield lost a narrow 4-3 game to St. Charles at St. Charles West. The Pirates pushed across two runs in the fifth inning which proved to be the difference. Zach Ham led Winfield, going 3 for 3 and had two RBIs. Chandler Hollingsworth had the other RBI.

The girls teamed finished third overall with 81 points behind Francis Howell who had 190 and Timberland with 98.     Jacob Williams, a junior at Troy Buchanan, is the GAC South Division Player of the year in golf. Coach Myron Daw said about 60 percent of the individual conference points are awarded at each of the regular season dual matches played against each school and the other 40 percent at the GAC Conference Tournament.     On Thursday,May 2, Winfield traveled to Kennedy for a rain-soaked game. Unfortunately, Winfield lost the closely-contested match by a final score of 1-0, Kennedy scoring the only goal of the game in the second half.
