The first paddlefish snagging trip for Andy Belobraydic III will be one he’ll remember for the rest of his life. The 33-year-old Richwoods resident turned an already successful day on Table Rock Lake into an unforgettable one by snagging a state-record paddlefish Saturday.   • First girls’ soccer win in Elsberry history, boys lose to Festus, Winfield in baseball

    Elsberry/Silex Elly Boothe (right) scored four goals in one game helping the program to its first-ever win in girls’ soccer.

    At the start of last year’s Lady Indians soccer season Head Coach Hector Bencomo stated that he and his team were determined to score at least one goal. After enduring the previous season in which the team was unable to record a win or even score a single goal, their determination to put at least one point on the board in 2014 may have seemed a lofty dream to some.

  • Elsberry spring sports coaches look for athletes to attain success

    Elsberry Track and Field Coaches Scott Cleveland and Hector Bencomo are already dreaming of state medals for some of their returning athletes this year. The two have come up with a unique strategy that seems to work well for the team as a whole. “Hector deals more with the running events and I handle the field events,” said Cleveland. “We don’t really break it down so much by gender anymore.”

  • MDC says spring turkey hunting looks good for most of Missouri

    Missouri turkey hunters can expect a good spring season overall according to the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC). The spring turkey hunting season starts with a youth-only weekend April 11-12 for young hunters ages 6-15.   • Price earns bronze medal in NCAA championships

    Deanna Price placed third and earned the bronze medal at the recent NCAA Division I Final Championships held March 13 in Fayetteville, Ark.  She has overcome a serious knee injury and continues her training in hopes of earning a trip to the 2016 Olympics. She is a 2011 graduate of Troy Buchanan High.

    A Troy athlete continues her pursuit of a dream which only a few may attain… representing her country in the World Olympics.   • Bencomo goes over 1,000 points

    During a Feb. 17 game against Montgomery County Elsberry senior Tanner Bencomo scored her 1,000th career point. Bencomo is the second Lady Indian to record such an accomplishment within the last two years. Elsberry’s Brittni Hagemeier, a 2014 graduate, put up her 1,000th point last February. “Another goal of mine is to play basketball in college,” said Bencomo. “I don’t know if that’s in the cards for me or not.

  • Season ends for Trojans!

    The basketball season came to a close for Troy Buchanan High teams last week as the districts played at Fort Zumwalt West. In girls’ action, Troy defeated Wentzville Timberland 59-36 in the first round but lost 54-45 to the host Lady Jaguars in the semi-finals.     As the Troy Buchanan High teams begin districts in basketball this week, both teams experienced positive vibes in recent games. In boys’ action, the Trojans lost 62-55 to Francis Howell Central but bounced back to post a 5-47 win over Francis Howell North.
