The Missouri FFA Association recognized Hannah Barber of the Elsberry FFA Chapter as Area 5 Star in Agriscience at the stateFFA convention.
Her parents are Eric and Nicole Barber of Elsberry. Her advisors are Jason Vandivort and Brett Waddell.
Area Stars in Agriscience are selected based upon outstanding achievement in agriscience as part of a student’s supervised agricultural experience program and active participation in FFA. Area 5 includes 19 chapters in the Northeast District.
MFA Inc., Columbia, sponsors the 16 area Star in Agriscience awards and the State Star in Agriscience Award.
Barber began her SAE program working with a partner to create a hydroponic fertilizer agriscience project. They advanced to the Missouri FFA Agriscience Fair, where the project placed second in the plant systems division. In addition, she and her partner studied meat preservation efficiency for another agriscience project.
Barber served as chapter president and historian. She competed in the state floriculture, poultry evaluation, nursery and landscaping, and agronomy career development events and the grassland evaluation contest. For the past three years, she has attended the Washington Leadership Conference and National FFA Convention.
In addition to FFA, Barber is the committee chairwoman for Operation Backpack and is a member of National Honor Society. She competed at the district level for pole vaulting with her track team. She is also a member of the soccer and cheer teams.
After high school, Barber plans to study agribusiness, and plant and soil science at Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau. She plans to become an agronomist in a rural community after college graduation.
