Troy Buchanan High School junior, Allison Bicker, representing Troop No. 2164 from District 18 of Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri (GSEM), has been awarded the Girl Scout Gold Award. This is the highest award a Girl Scout can earn.
The award represents outstanding accomplishments in leadership development and advocating for others.
Project Reuse-A-Ball has been established to promote awareness about the problem of not recycling tennis balls.
“A tennis ball takes approximately 450 years to naturally decompose, producing methane gas that can contribute to global warming,” said Ms. Bicker.
Roughly 300 hundred million tennis balls are produced each year and can be recycled easily and inexpensively through their collection. ReBounces pays for the shipping and the used balls are repurposed to make new surfaces for tennis courts and/or rubber mulch used in playgrounds.
A special thanks goes to Jason Smith, TBHS activities director, and Anairene Teson, co-leader of Girl Scout Troop #2164, whose involvement in this project made it a reality.
