Recently, the Central Electric Power Cooperative (CEPC) launched a new program to reduce the theft and vandalism of copper wire. Residents who see suspicious activity near power lines, substations, vehicles or offices owned by your electrical cooperative can call a toll free hotline. If their tip leads to an arrest and conviction, residents can earn a reward of $1,000.
“The Sheriff’s Office responds to hundreds of calls a year for the theft and vandalism of copper wire,” said Lincoln County Sheriff Cottle. “I believe programs like the one CEPT launched will help law enforcement combat this growing program and reward citizens at the same time.”
The hotline number is 1-855-COPPER9 (267-7379). Rewards through the CEPC are only good for cooperative property only. Citizens who see copper theft of residential homes or businesses are encouraged to call 9-1-1 Communications at 528-6100.
