Class of 2018 what they never got to experience

Graduation is just around the corner for seniors in the area. It’s a scary and exciting time as they begin a new path into the “adult” lifestyle of getting either a full time job or furthering their schooling. Some will move to colleges far away, while others will take advantage of our local St. Charles Community college, but all will be taking the next step into their career paths.

While the seniors are graduating, eighth graders are preparing themselves for their first high school experience. They will be the class of 2018! I don’t know about you, but to me that sounds much farther into the future than it actually is. Here are some things that these youngin’s never had to experience:

– They’ve never heard the sound of dial up Internet, or the struggle of waiting for a connection.

– They’ve never experienced the frustration of trying to record their favorite songs from the radio to a tape, only to have the DJ start talking and ruin everything.

– They’ve never played a tape, which also means they have never had to rewind their tape after the tape machine “ate” it.

– They have never burned a CD, some may not have ever owned a CD either.

– Beanie Babies were never seen as a gold mine to them.

– They have only been alive for three Harry Potter books.

– They were never forced to look at frosted tips everywhere they went (oh the 1990s).

– They’ve never had to untangle a phone cord or straighten an antenna for TV reception.

– They’ve always had GPS and have never had to look up directions and print them out.

– “Roll down your window” has no meaning.

– Neither does “don’t touch that dial.”

– They’ve never had the crushing realization that their disposable camera pictures didn’t come out well.

– They don’t understand where the shutter sound your phone makes when it takes a picture comes from.

– If you say, “You sound like a broken record,” chances are they won’t understand you.

– They’ve never lived in a world with monthly texting limits.

It’s amazing how the world changes so quickly as I have experienced all of these and I was a 2006 graduate. These upcoming freshmen were all born in the 2000 or 2001. Technology sure does make a huge difference when it comes to our lifestyle changes and I’m pretty thankful that I am able to experience it. There are many more items to add to their list, but I’m sure you have seen the same article that listed them so I will keep it short.

So what have you experienced that you no longer have to deal with on a day to day basis? Maybe give your children/grandchildren a lesson in history and relive the days of the past because it could just fascinate them.
