Constantine “Gus” Canelos, 96, of Truxton, passed away at his residence on Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013. He was born on March 16, 1917 in Los Angeles, Calif. to Vassilios and Christina Canelos.  Gus served in the U.S. Army as an anti-tank gunner and was stationed in the Philipines during WWII. He was married to Anne Martinek in 1939 and to this union were born six children: William “Bill”,James, Harold, Elaine, Mary and Christine. While the children were young, they lived in Chicago, lll. Gus was a lithographer and owned “Direct Litho Service” in Chicago for over 30 years. Gus loved music, gardening and served as a volunteer for many years with Warren County Ambulance District. He was very adventuresome and at the age of 70 learned how to fly and also worked at Hidden Valley with the ski patrol until he was in his 80s. He was a member of Warreton Elks and Hawk Point VFW. Gus was a devoted member of St. Mary’s Church in Hawk Point for many years.

He is survived by his loving children: William “Bill” and wife Sharron Canelos of Truxton, Harold Canelos of Truxton, Elaine and husband James Browning of St. Peters, Mary and husband Peter Martens of Urbana, IL, Christine and husband Michael Welsh of Palatine, Il; daughter-in-law, Susan Canelos of Truxton; 16 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren.

Visitation- Friday Jan. 3, 2014 from 4-8 p.m. at McCoy – Blossom Funeral & Cremation Center, 493 Main Street, Hawk Point.

Funeral Mass-Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014 at 10 a.m. at St.Mary’s Catholic Church in Hawk Point.

Mary Houlahan

Mary Katherine Houlahan, 67, of Troy, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013, at the Lincoln County Medical Center in Troy.

She was born on Sept. 26, 1946,in Fort Madison, Iowa, a daughter of the late Thomas J. and Irene A. (Kluesner) O’Brien.

Mary graduated from New London High School in 1964 and continued her education at Mercy College of Nursing in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, as a registered nurse. She was a registered nurse for 46 years in various hospitals, including Davenport Osteopathic Hospital and most recently retired from Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital.

Mary enjoyed baking, traveling with family and friends and was an avid scrapbooker.

She is survived by her significant other of 20 years, Everett Parton, of Foristell; children, Brian Houlahan (Vicki) of Olathe, Kan., Megan Orme (Brandon) of Troy, and Michael Houlahan (Joshua Lemmer) of Chicago, Ill.; grandchildren, James Houlahan, Micaela Houlahan, Finn Houlahan, Mackenzie Lynn Orme and Samuel Orme; former husband and father to her children, Patrick J. Houlahan of O’Fallon; cousins and friends.

Friends will be received from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2013 at Kemper-Marsh-Millard Family Funeral Home/ Troy Chapel. Memorial mass will  be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church  Troy.

Betty Jean Perkins, 81, of Silex, passed away Sunday, Dec. 29, 2013, at the Silex Community Care Center.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Friday, Jan. 3, 2014 at the Briscoe Holliness Church near Silex with Rev. George Prior, Rev. Richard Perkins III, and Rev. Sammy Lorton officiating.  Visitation will be  held 3 – 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014 at the Mudd-Veach Funeral Home in Silex. Burial waa at the Mill Creek Cemetery at Silex.

Betty was born Feb. 29, 1932, in Oskaloosa, Iowa the daughter of Loyd and Pearl Mitchell Crispen. She married Richard E. (Perk) Perkins Sr.,  on July 15, 1950 in Des Moines, Iowa.   He passed away July 18, 2013.

Survivors include: one son Richard Eugene Perkins Jr. and wife, Dorothy, of Houston; five daughters Margaret Cox and husband, Terry, of Troy, Phyllis Klober and husband, Kelly, of Silex, Janet Slawson, of Silex, Donna Porter and husband, Wesley, of Montgomery City, Cathy Govero and husband, Philip, of New Hartford; nine grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; brother-in-law Robert Sifrit and wife, Mina, of McPherson, Kan.; nephews and cousins.

Betty lived in Iowa until she was 18, when she moved to the Silex area.  She was a member of the Briscoe Holiness Church.  Betty worked all the time serving several roles within Rosedale Nursing Home in Silex.

Memorials may be made to the AmHeart Hospice or donor’s choice.
