On Jan. 31, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department concluded an internal investigation resulting in the arrest of one of their employees. Since taking over in January, Sheriff John
Cottle has begun performing internal reviews of each division within his department. He reported developing information leading his investigators to suspect theft was taking place within the department. Investigators arrested one of the employees, Helen Diane Mershon, of Troy, for allegedly embezzling un undisclosed amount of money over an undetermined amount of time.
“One thing I demand from my employees is accountability for their actions and integrity in all they do. Until I stepped in this January, there was no accountability for one employee who handled all of the inmates’ money and operated with no supervision at all. My employees are an extension of myself, and as such, they are as fiscally accountable to both the inmates and the citizens of Lincoln County as I am.”
Sheriff Cottle has already put a new system in place to prevent this from happening again.
Lincoln County Prosecuting Attorney’s office has charged Mershon with theft/stealing (value of property or services $25,000 or more), a class B felony. She is currently being held on $75,000 cash only bond at the county jail.
Those charged with a crime are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
