Douglas J. Howery, 60, of Springfield was sentenced Monday, Feb. 4 to life in prison without parole for the 1992 slaying of
his wife, Betty Ann Howery, on their Annada farm.
Audrain County Judge Keith Sutherland was bound by law to sentence him to life without parole, according to 45th Judicial District (public) Defender Tom Crocco, because the prosecuting attorney did not seek the death penalty.
Howery was found guilty last Nov. 29 in Sutherland’s 12th Judicial Circuit on a change of venue from the Pike and Lincoln County 45th Judicial District. Crocco is the lead public defender for the 45th District.
Crocco said right after the trial that he would appeal the verdict.
Howery’s wife was missing for years when workers dug up her remains in a cracked septic tank on the farm after Howery sold it. They used her son’s DNA to identify her remains.
