Lincoln County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the fairgrounds in the late hours of May 21, 2013, after receiving a call a subject was stabbed during an altercation. When deputies arrived they observed the victim, a native of South Africa, bleeding profusely from his abdomen.
Witnesses on scene told deputies just before midnight 25 year old, Basil Carelse, was involved in a physical altercation with the victim. After fighting, Carelse went to his bunk, got a knife and plunged it into the 22 year old victim twice in the stomach. Carlese then threw the knife into a nearby field. The knife was recovered by on scene deputies.
The victim was airlifted to Mercy Hospital in Creve Couer by an Arch helicopter in serious but stable condition.
Both men are from South Africa and work for the Southeast Amusement Carnival Company in Farmland, Indiana, and had been working at a fair in St. Charles County.
Deputies arrested Carelse for felony Assault in the Second Degree and is currently being held at the Lincoln County Jail pending a warrant application.
Those charged with a crime are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
