One person was killed in a three-vehicle accident Wednesday, according to a report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

The accident occurred at 1:30 p.m. on Hwy. 79 just south of Winfield.

According to the Patrol’s report, a 2002 Jeep Cherokee driven by Samantha Russo, 30, of Foley, was traveling north on Hwy. 79 and sideswiped a northbound 2003 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Ray Farris, 79, of Foley. A 1993 Dodge Dakota driven by Dennis Stevens, 48, of Winfield was traveling south. Russo lost control and traveled into the southbound lanes and struck Stevens’ pickup head on.

Stevens was pronounced at the scene by Coroner Rick Ingersoll at 1:45 p.m. Russo was not in her seat belt at the time of the accident but Farris and Stevens were.

Russo had serious injuries and was flown by ARCH medical helicopter to Mercy Hospital in Creve Coeur.

The Winfield Foley Fire Protection District volunteers were requested to respond to the accident scene. Once on scene, they found three vehicles involved in the accident. Two vehicles had heavy front end damage due to a head on collision and the third vehicle was side swiped. The scene quickly became busy as the Winfield Foley Fire Protection District, Lincoln County Fire Protection District, Old Monroe Fire Protection District worked together to extricate the patients from the vehicles.

Hwy. 79 was closed in both directions for approximately four hours following the accident while crash reconstruction crews investigated.
