A long awaited sidewalk is in the works for the Winfield community. Talk of building the sidewalk has been going around since Melissa Merrill was hit by a car over a year ago while crossing the street to get to school. Merrill survived with just minor scrapes but a movement soon started to make safety a top priority. After a long spat of back and forth with the businesses in town, the final plans were approved last March. The sidewalk will stretch from the Winfield High School and travel alongside Highway 47 and down Harry’s Way, ending at the ambulance district. A crosswalk is also in the plans as students will need to cross Highway 47. MoDOT fully funded the sidewalk and crosswalk project. The project started in early June and is set to be finished before school starts.
