From the archives: Phone system in Silex converted stranded family found safe on sand bar

June 14 , 1957

On June 1, the telephone system in Silex was converted from the old board system to the dial system. The system is owned by The Eastern Missouri Telephone Company with Waldo Buchanan the president and manager.

Howard Schieffer was the winner of the Farmers Elevator and Supply Co.’s award of a bred Landrace gilt. He was the outstanding sophomore livestock judge in the vocational agriculture class at Buchanan High.

Moscow Mills-Linda Helmich attended State Club Week. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arlie Helmich.

Silex-Voters passed a revenue bond issue 61-0 for a water system for the village.

Debbie Frazier was installed as the Honor Queen of Bethel No. 58 International Order of Job;s Daughters. Jackie Austin, retiring queen, was the installing officer for the ceremony.

Troy Presbyterian Church was chosen for the “American Historical “ Registry, meeting strict historical standards.
Among the the three teachers hired by the Troy R-III School District was David Surber as a English teacher. Surber taught last year at Silex R-I.

Steve Kientzy was installed as the new president of the Silex Area Jaycees.

Several stranded family members were found safe on a sand bar after being reported missing overnight. The group had entered the Cuivre River at Heitman’s Boat Landing and did not return home. They were found near where the Cuivre River and the Mississippi River meet.

Kelly Hardcastle was the recipient of the 20097 Economic Development Professional of the Year presented by the Missouri Economic Development Council.

Lincoln County Memorial Hospital presented scholarships to graduating seniors planning to pursue a career in the health care field. The students included Trisha Bobeen, Carol Portwood, Hannah Niehoff Kayisha Barnes, Hannah Martin, and Eric Gibson.
