The Troy Buchanan wrestlers opened their tournament season recently at Fort Zumwalt East. Teams from across the state showed up for the challenge. This is the beginning of the busy portion of the season; a tournament nearly every weekend until the end of the season.
Troy had several starters absent from the lineup due to the ACT testing and injuries. To help fill the lineup several freshmen had their first varsity appearance.
Alec Seely, a junior, wrestling in the 138 pound class, stood alone as the only finalist from Troy. Seely battled his way through the competition. In the finals, Seely was leading, and then ended the match with a pin early in the second period.
Nick Schulte, a senior at the 120 pound class fought hard and placed fourth. Ian Zykan, senior at 145 pounds wrestled his way to fifth place. In his first appearance on the varsity level, freshmen, AJ Wieda, in the 113 pound class, brawled his way to claim fifth place.
The Troy Buchanan team has a lot of talent and the coaches will continue to push them through the season to the MSHAA state championship at Columbia, Mo. in Feb.
