The Silex R-1 school district will begin the 2017-2018 school year on Aug. 17.
The board approved the calendar at the March 8 meeting.
Classes will conclude on May 18, 2018. Graduation will be the same day. The calendar committee chose Aug. 17 as the start date in order to correspond with Pike Lincoln Technical Center classes, which will begin on the Aug. 15.
The board unanimously passed a motion to make an exception to a motion passed at the Sept. 14, 2011, meeting that states the school year would start the Monday after the state fair.
Board President Tommy Kreuger said that the board had enacted the policy due to family vacations and other summer activities.
“That was not based on the state fair totally, there were other factors,” he said.
Kreuger said that they had made exceptions in the past. Calendar committee spokesperson Ron Counterman stated that students exhibiting in the state fair would be exempt from missing any days.
“If you’re going to a ballgame or you are involved in the State Fair, that will not be docked against you,” he said.
The State Fair will be held from Aug. 10-20.
In addition, the board also moved the early dismissal dates to Fridays. During the meeting, there was discussion whether in-service days should be set to Wednesday instead of Friday because of attendance and quality of work among staff. However, Counterman said that administrators should keep teachers accountable for attendance.
“Friday is what everybody preferred,” said Counterman. “We also talked about a lot of things to make it very clear to staff that you have to be there on those early outs and not be scheduling a day off just to have the day off.”
Counterman also said that the school could go to Wednesday if having the early out days on Friday became a concern.
Spring break will run from March 26-April 2 next school year.
The following dates will be delegated as snow make-up dates. They are Dec. 22, Jan. 15, Feb. 19, April 2, May 21, may 22, May 23, May 24 and May 25. Another snow day will be built in.
