On Saturday, April 26, the River Hills and Wind Ridge Farmers’ Markets will unite to hold their annual Spring Poultry Expo. This year the base site will be relocated to the City Park in Silex, and the day will begin with farmers market at 7:30 a.m. Visitors and marketers should first check in at the main pavilion in the City Park.
It will be one of the year’s largest farmers’ markets and will include plants, baked goods, baby chicks, poultry supplies, hatching eggs, and many heirloom poultry varieties. The day will include an egg show with three table eggs being an entry, a jackpotted poultry show, and a traditional country auction.
The River Hills region of Eastern Missouri has long been known for the quality of the poultry and eggs show produced there. Nearly a hundred years ago hatching eggs were shipped from the region to produce hens that competed in and won National and International egg laying competitions.
The American Livestock Breeds Conservancy has noted and reported on the large number of rare and heirloom poultry varieties that continue to be produced in the region. On April 26, there will be no admission fee for visitors. This event will bring opportunities to view many different poultry varieties from the daintiest of pigeons to some of the largest of the chicken breeds.
